Hurricane-Ready Home Upgrades Every Homeowner Should Know
Roofs, windows, doors and drainage take the brunt of a big storm. These upgrades help your home ride out the season with less damage and less stress.

Living near the coast means sunshine most of the year and a few weeks when the forecast has everyone checking their shutters. The good news is that many of the upgrades that protect a home during a storm also make it more comfortable and efficient the rest of the time.
Start at the top with your roof
Wind gets under loose shingles and tiles and lifts them away, opening the door to water damage. Ask a roofer to check fastening, ridge caps and flashing around vents and chimneys. If your roof is older, a replacement with stronger attachment and a sealed roof deck can make a real difference.
Protect windows and doors
Openings are the weak points of any home. Impact-rated windows and doors resist flying debris without the need to put up panels every time a storm approaches. If replacement is not in the plans yet, well-fitted storm shutters are a practical step.
- Check that garage doors are rated for high winds or add a bracing kit.
- Replace worn weatherstripping around entry doors.
- Make sure sliding doors lock firmly and sit tight in their tracks.
Manage water around the house
Heavy rain can be just as damaging as wind. Clean gutters and extend downspouts away from the foundation. Grade soil so it slopes away from the walls, and consider a backflow valve if street drains tend to overflow in your neighbourhood.
Keep the power and the people safe
Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms before the season starts, especially if you plan to use a generator. Generators should always run outdoors, well away from windows and doors. A solar system with battery storage can keep essentials running quietly after an outage.
Make a simple home checklist
Write down where your main water shut-off, electrical panel and gas valve are, and keep copies of insurance and warranty documents somewhere safe and easy to grab. A little preparation now saves a lot of scrambling later.
